Sodium stearoyl lactyate is called SSL, It is ivory powder or flake-shaped solid. It can be dispersed well in hot water and soluble in ethanol and hot oils and fats with pleasant caramel-like odor. It is an anionic emulsifier with HLB value of 8.3.
Slightly caramel-scented, slightly hygroscopic, used as anionic surfactants; food emulsifiers; cosmetic emulsifiers and thickeners.
Sodium stearoyl lactylate production
(1) The lactic acid was heated to 100-110 C under reduced pressure and concentrated. The concentrated lactic acid reacted with stearic acid and sodium carbonate at 190-200 C in the atmosphere of inert gas carbon dioxide, and then cooled.
(2) Firstly, lactic acid is neutralized into sodium salt and then esterified with stearic acid.
